This week, Pastor Parkey continues his teaching of “RED” which focuses on the words of Jesus. For part 10, Pastor focuses on loving our enemies. Jesus teaches in Luke 6 to love our enemies, blessing those who curse us and not striking back when we are attacked. This is one of the hardest things for us to accomplish as believers, especially in an age where there is increasing persecution! Much of this type of attitude is an unspiritual response to not letting others define us or take what is ours. This type of self protective behavior can actually be rooted in a lack of security rather than strength of character. We are to live separate from sinners in how when we do good for others, we should not expect reciprocation.
The first thing we can do to begin loving our enemies is to give back to others what we have received from Christ; we receive mercy and love from God, and need to give it to others (Romans 5:8). We also need to take liberty from the control of others over our lives! When we are still pulling our worth from the responses of others to us, we are allowing other control over us and our actions. We need to walk in faith in Christ and not under the opinions of people. The last key to loving our enemies is a powerful trust in the control of God! We have to fully sacrifice control of our own life to Christ, trusting His word and instruction. Let your life be defined by Christ; love your enemies!
